If youre planning to send Christmas cards, youll need to get them in the post asap!
The railways carry more than 20 million letters on an ordinary day and three times as many during the Christmas season.
Each Christmas card posted contributes an average 20g of CO2 to the environment during its journey from you to its destination, in terms of transportation and power used. And think of all that waste paper. You could send the Planet Science email cybercard to save energy but does it? How much energy is used in sending an email?
Christmas cards date from 1843 when Henry Cole decided he did not have enough to write to everyone at Christmas. He hired an artist, who printed 1000 cards for him to send. His card showed a family drinking, which was considered outrageous but was very popular!
