ethical emporium
A rich collection of resources for teaching ethics in the classroom.
Modern biomedicine presents numerous challenges for society and these are being reflected in emerging science curricula.
However, research such as The Wellcome Trust’s 2001 “Valuable lessons” report, shows that although there is a desire to teach these challenging topics, few teachers have the training, confidence or resources to deliver the material.
Ethical Emporium aims to address these issues by supplying teachers with interesting topical content and teaching resources through an easy to use website and/or DVD.
Our approach includes three key areas: Topics, where you will find case studies and rich digital media designed to stimulate discussion; Teaching techniques, which includes advice and resources for teaching modern bio-ethical issues, and Continuing Professional Development, training courses run at the Science Learning Centre London, which give teachers the opportunity to engage with new resources and new approaches to teaching.
A fully-functioning prototype for the site has been created, containing multiple video clips and student worksheets for one case study on genes and the anti-social behaviour. The prototype has been tested at teacher training sessions and in classrooms and has met with an overwhelmingly positive response. The consortium producing the site are currently seeking funding to create content for a whole range of case studies.
