Friday 15th July 2005 Issue: 25

Welcome to Hay-Wire – the Planet Science newsletter for ALL young scientists. This issue we’re getting to grips with the Romans, so here’s what’s coming up...

  1. Planet Picks – While you’re ‘roamin’ around the website this month, why not enter the July Roman Quiz?
  2. Up For Grabs – Just how rotten were the Romans? This book will reveal all...
  3. Tummy Ticklers – On the subject of rotten, here are some rotten jokes for you to digest!
1. Planet Picks – News from the world of Planet Science...

To celebrate the start of July, Planet Science has come up with a quiz all about Julius Caeser. If you’ve heard the name before then you’ll know he was the most famous Roman leader of all. “So what’s this got to do with July?” I can hear you all shouting at your computer screens! Well, it’s quite simple really – the month of July is named after Julius Caeser!

Now I can hear you shouting: “What’s he got to do with science?” The answer to that question is that the Romans were big on science, engineering and maths. So we put the month of July and the Romans together and came up with this quiz:

You might find the questions a little tough so why not get your family involved? Two human brains are better than one so your mum or dad or older brother or sister may be able to help you out. Although that means you might have to share the prize, which this month is a selection of Roman goodies.

2. Up For Grabs – You’ve got to be in it to win it...

Also up for grabs this month are five copies of Scholastic’s ‘Rotten Romans’ book by Terry Deary. ‘Rotten Romans’ features beastly battles, deadly doctoring, sick science and marvellous myths – you can even find out how to tell the future using a dead chicken! It’s packed with quizzes, sketches, music and jokes, as well as mini-dramas and real life re-enactments – telling you the kind of foul facts you’ve always wanted to know!

To be in with a chance of winning, all you have to do is email your name, age and address to: Hay-Wire.Clubhouse@nesta.org.uk All entries will be entered into a draw and the winner will be chosen at random on Thursday 28th July at 5pm.

Good luck!
3. Tummy Ticklers – It’s the way we tell them!

If you’re lucky enough to be a book winner, you’ll find out about the Romans’ rotten sense of humour. The Romans certainly knew how to get a giggle, and we’re hoping you’ll have a giggle at these jokes too:

Q) Which mouse was a Roman Emperor?
A) Julius ‘Cheeser’!

Q) Which figures do the most walking?
A) Roman numerals!

Q) How was the Roman Empire cut in half?
A) With a pair of ‘Caesears’!

Teacher: When was Rome built?
Pupil: At night.
Teacher: Why did you say that?
Pupil: Because my dad always says that Rome wasn’t built in a day!

Teacher: What was a Roman forum?
Pupil: Two-um plus two-um!

We dare you to try that last joke out on your maths teacher...!
