Sorry, the competition and mail out is OVER for this year - but do come back soon to see what the winners got up to. Thank you.

The Competition Rules

Who is the competition for?

For budget/funding reasons, Making a Mint posting and prizes are only open to UK or BFPO address only.

The competition is for groups of children or young people from 7 to 14 years old, and their teachers or other adults.

We are expecting most of the groups will be school classes, but we don’t want to rule out any groups of young people of that age, so if you belong to a home educators group, or a guide or scout group for example you are welcome too.

Where did the idea of the competition come from?

NESTA, who runs Planet Science, have an aim to ‘transform the capacity of the UK for innovation’, this means there’s an enterprise flavour to a lot of the work the NESTA Future Innovators Team does. Planet Science, as part of this team, has joined forces with Future Innovators staff to promote not only a bit of botany, but a bit of enterprise too. We hope the projects we run together will help to instil the skills and attributes that help towards making innovators of the future.

What do I have to do to win?

  1. Make enough money to be in the top 50 of all the participating groups.

  2. Make sure you’ve filled in your balance sheet and had it verified by a contactable pillar of the community.

  3. Make sure you keep a photographic and/or video record of your growing and enterprise endeavours, digital or not.

We have provided a balance sheet for you to keep up with how much you spend, and owe, on your Making a Mint project and how much you make. Towards the end of summer term we’ll ask you to upload the total of your profits (just the £number – not the cash, that’s yours) to our Making a Mint database. When you register for a pack we’ll also ask you for contact details so if your profits are in the top 50 of all the uploads we’ll be able to contact you for your minty story, the balance sheet and the photos you’ve taken of your mint experience.

Our panel of NESTA experts will take the amount of money you’ve made into account, but they’ll also be looking for ingenuity and flair in the ideas for your money making mint activities too. You can sell products to raise money for your school or charity – some did very successfully last year – but the judges will be looking for something extra beyond a tug at the heart strings to tug people’s purse strings! (It’s a cliché but the judges decision is final!)

Don’t be swayed by the winners and their tactics last year – they did a great job, but you might make it with just one brilliant well researched product for example, or another sort of idea altogether…

Who decides who wins?

Your judges will be none other than:

  • Mike Estill, Investment Analyst, NESTA
  • Katherine Mathieson, Team Leader, Future Innovators, NESTA

  • Helen Gresty, Executive, Innovation Programmes, NESTA
  • Gerard Darby, Programme Manager, Future Innovators

How will I get news of the project?

We’ll set up a Mint Corner in the Planet Science Newsletter – keep reading for mint ideas and updates.

What do we do with the money we make with our mint?

That’s entirely up to you!

When do I need to get my results in?

All results must be entered by 9pm on Sunday 6th July 2008 . Click here for the result entry form.
